Algorithms

Although the concepts of balance and diversity may seem easy and simple to follow, there are reasons society has such difficulty consuming this way: a little thing called Algorithms. By definition, algorithms are encoded procedures for transforming input data into a desired output, based on specified calculations (Gillespie). Although algorithms help us navigate massive databases and help manage our interactions on social networking, they also determine what to serve up based on input from the use (Gillespie). This means that they basically choose what information is relevant to us and determine what we need to know. This creates difficulty because it is hard to avoid repetition of certain biases on information. Another term Gillespie talks about is search engine optimization, which manipulate coding of a website to increase its relevance with specific words (Gillespie). This is a form of Internet marketing strategy, and it affects visibility of websites. Due to algorithms and SEO’s, it is hard to get the most credible, relevant information these days through the Internet. Therefore, following all the tips to “consume healthy” are very important.
